Three for the World

I’m starting a new column called “Three for the World” where I will feature short posts you can typically read in a few minutes about what God is doing through amazing women and men around the world. This post is about the remarkable Christian leaders in Ukraine.

After extremely unfortunate,  inaccurate, and harmful comments by the President of the United States, former Vice President Mike Pence published this remark on social media:

Ukrainian writer, podcaster, and Riggins Rights Management European rights director, Nadiyka Gerbish commented about President Trump’s speech as well, saying, ” . . . his remarks yesterday, blaming Ukraine for starting the war, shattered that illusion. This was not about business. This was about the outlook. In these past weeks, I have found comfort and guidance in the Book of Isaiah, one of the most political books of the Bible, and one that perfectly captures the theology of the oppressed, which is, at the same time, the theology of God’s righteousness.”

It’s crucial that believers in America continue to stand with our sisters and brothers in Ukraine during this prolonged period of devastating war. That’s why I’m thankful to be a part of an organization that has invested in theological leaders and the institutions they serve in Ukraine for several years and is doubling down on their public support for the Church in Ukraine. After the Russian invasion, Scholar Leaders established the “Ukrainian Relief Fund” and worked with the Overseas Council to coordinate care and share the resources to ensure Ukrainian seminaries serving as hubs for survivors of the war to receive the kind of support to best support their work. By the end of 2022, the coordinated work of the seminary hubs had provided care for nearly half a million people.

Scholar Leaders recently sent over 25,000 theological books to Ukraine to re-establish the library for Tavriski Christian Institute, whose buildings and library were destroyed in the early days of the war. For the last several days, the president of Scholar Leaders, Dr. Christopher M. Hays, and our vice president for leadership formation, Dr. Evelyn Reynolds, have traveled across Ukraine meeting with Christian leaders. To learn more about the work of Scholar Leaders, visit

Let’s stay connected to what God’s doing around the world and stand in solidarity with all those serving to advance God’s Kingdom, particularly those serving in the most difficult of places. Below are a few pictures of the recent trip mentioned above, and a video overviewing Scholar Leaders’ important work in Ukraine.
